Accessible and Refreshing

“I’ll tell you why you should go see this show: besides having probably the best title a show could want, it is without a doubt one of the most honest performances around.  Technically speaking, it doesn’t have much in the way of moving parts: just actor-musician Bob Karper, a piano, an accordion, some slides and a letter from his mum, all plonked in the middle of the Iron Belly.  Karper unselfconsciously relates personal stories and reflections as he accompanies himself in a similarly free and easy fashion.  His life isn’t racy or controversial – in short, just like our own.  Perhaps it’s this simplicity that makes it so accessible and refreshing, especially after a day of performances which try too hard (or not hard enough) to be something else.  It’s like a warm cup of coffee and a chat with a good friend.  So go, and save your guarded cynicism for the other late night shows.  Then call your mother: she misses you.”
